There’s about to be a new Chevy on the track at NASCAR. Jesse Iwuji Motorsports will debut a Chevrolet Camaro Super Sport race car in the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series. The team is co-owned by former Dallas Cowboys owner and Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, along with racecar driver and Navy serviceman Jesse Iwuji, who will helm the No. 34 Camaro SS.
Iwuji is enthusiastic about his chance to work with Chevrolet, since he began his racing career behind the wheel of his beloved Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06 — which he still owns today. “The story of going from the Navy to NASCAR and having my Corvette play a key part in that journey makes this partnership not only authentic, but inspirational for any person out there looking to accomplish big goals and dreams,” Iwuji stated.
Currently, Iwuji balances his Naval career with NASCAR. He’s currently in the Navy Reserve after seven years of active duty. Throughout his racing career, he’s made five career starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2020-2021, and 15 in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series from 2018-2021.
Iwuji and Smith have high hopes for their team this year — and given the track record of Chevrolet vehicles, they have a good reason to be excited. Chevrolet conquered the NASCAR Xfinity Series Manufacturer’s Championship in 2021, marking the brand’s 23rd win — and seventh win since the Camaro became the automaker’s flagship vehicle in 2013.
